World Music Day first originated in a French national radio station France Musique in 1976 & is the brain child of US musician Joel Cohen.
Its also known as Fête de la Musique which is actually a Lebanese music festival.

This was taken further by French Music and Dance director Maurice Fleuret for Minister of Culture  Jack Lang in 1981 and first took place in 1982.Its mainly aimed at encouraging budding artists & musical art forms of various regions without the racial distinction.

Concerts are organised free of cost & even popular artists find time to showcase their magic to popularise the event. This event which first came up in France is now spreading around the globe & has become an international festival in a very short period. Thanks to various commercial establishments coming up with sponserships & providing larger platforms, the event is blooming  in India as well.Various TV channels ,specifically the music channels are aiming at it as a potential source of revenue generation by holding competitions & live concerts by reknown artists!Radio stations & music channels are filled up with all day long celebrations.
